I have a new job! I'm the Registrar at the High Point Museum, so I'm moving back to Greensboro and starting the job on February 11. I'm going to have to learn a lot in a short amount of time, but I think it'll be really fun. I'm really looking forward to being near all my Greensboro friends and my great church and the Greensboro library and Ed McKay :)

Position Summary

The High Point Museum seeks an energetic candidate for a Registrar position. This position will complete the final stages of a wall-to-wall inventory and assist with reconciling the inventory with official records. The Registrar will be responsible for cataloging incoming, stored, and loaned collections, creating and maintaining computerized and manual records of the collection, and assessing collection conservation needs. Additionally, the Registrar will assist with exhibit installation and information requests.

Primary Responsibilities

· Complete the inventory of the museum collection.

· Work with the Curator of Collections to manage the museum’s permanent collection and process new acquisition. Produce incoming receipts and condition reports. Assign and apply accession numbers. Prepare forms, reports, letters, and evaluations related to the Museum’s collections.

· Maintain the museum’s collections management database. Enter inventory data and object information, scan images, and update collection information as needed.

· Assist with reconciling found in collections items.

· Assess collection conservation needs.

· Assist in preparing objects for exhibition and preparation of exhibit mounts.

· Facilitates access to the collection for scholars and researchers.

· Assist with processing incoming photographic reproduction requests and information requests.

· Maintain the Museum’s Integrated Pest Management system.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Registrar may supervise volunteers and college interns.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, or related field, Master’s degree preferred. One to three years of museum experience in collections or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with computerized relational database systems for museum collections, preferably PastPerfect.

Skills

Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team. Strong organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail. Adept at prioritizing tasks and managing multiple priorities and deadlines. Analytically skilled and likes the challenge of problem solving. Knowledge of museum standards regarding the care and handling of museum objects.

Job Conditions

Occasional contact with the general public in taking in donations and handling requests for information. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time at a computer. Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds. Must be comfortable on short ladders (less than eight feet high) and movable stair units.

Also, I've been wanting to take some online classes through www.museumclasses.org, but didn't want to spend the money on them, and the HPM signed me up for one on object numbering! I get a numbering kit with samples so I can experiment with pens and such on different kinds of materials - fun! :) Hopefully I'll get to take another one on Integrated Pest Management...not as much fun, but I know nothing about it and it's supposed to be part of my job. Anyway, I'm still at my old job, so I guess I should stop wasting time and get back to filling out 90923489348 purchase requests.

I'm applying for two more jobs...

1. Site Interpreter at Redcliffe Plantation SHS in South Carolina - "Plans thematic interpretive services focusing on the Hammond family, plantation life, African Americans, architecture, and decorative arts, at this state-owned historic house museum. Conducts tours, programs, workshops, field trips and activities for the park visitor through personal contact, oral and written communication. Promotes the park, the park system and the state. Performs curatorial duties including object care, registration, housekeeping, and research. Assists with administrative and operational activities and preservation of historic structures and landscapes as needed. Coordinates volunteers in conducting workshops and other park projects. Performs grounds activities and assists with the park’s maintenance. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in his/her absence.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree or a bachelor's degree and two years experience in the interpretation, public history, or the museum field. "

Adding up all my jobs and volunteering, I have close to four years of part-time experience, but I'm not sure if they'll consider that equal to two years of full-time experience.

2. Intern/Fellow in the Digital Research Lab at Colonial Williamsburg - again, not sure about the qualifications, but it sounds like a fun job. And "fellowship" sounds so important! :P

I also might apply for a job at the DAR Library in Washington, DC, although they want to fill the position immediately and I'm not available until September.

I started reading Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick yesterday, and as I was reading this morning, I came across a quote that I think sums up a lot of my opinions about war in general and particular the "war on terrorism".

In 1622, a group of about sixty men arrived at Plimouth to found a new colony. The Pilgrims had established a complicated, but relatively peaceful, relationship with the region's Indians, but these new settlers were hotheaded and quickly caused trouble with the neighboring Massachusetts. The Pilgrims at Plimouth learned from their ally Massasoit that the Massachusetts were planning an attack on both English settlements, and the only way for the Pilgrims to escape annilation was to attack first. They were reluctant to damage Pilgrim-Indian relations further, but finally decided to send Miles Standish and a few other men to attack a Massachusetts settlement. In the past, the Pilgrims had managed to assert their power with few casualties, but this time Standish was motivated by a personal grudge against a leader of the Massachusetts and massacred several prominent Indians after luring them to a supposedly peaceful meal. Pastor John Robinson, the leader of the Pilgrims still remaining in Leiden, Holland, was shocked at this bloodshed and disappointed that the Pilgrims had allowed Standish's personal anger to take precedence over respect and diplomacy. He sent a letter to Governor William Bradford in New England, saying, "...where blood is once begun to be shed, it is seldom staunched of a long time after."

I got to go back to Greensboro this weekend, which was a lot of fun. I miss living in a city and all my Greensboro friends, but I also really like being in the mountains right now. For one thing, it's a lot less humid!

I wish I'd had time to hang out with everyone, but I finally got to spend some quality time with Ashley! She was in Mexico all semester, so I hadn't seen her since December. We got to go shopping and wander around the Bog Garden and go to a beach music concert downtown with my aunt and uncle. Keri and I went to a movie on Friday night, then went to College Hill for some drinks (Sylva really needs a good bar). She has the cutest new Min Pin, who will lick you to death if you let her. After spending the last two nights sleeping in the same bed with Keri, two cats, and two dogs, I might be a little lonely tonight :P Melissa's wedding on Saturday was the kick off of Wedding Season 2007. Jenn and I walked off all the reception food at the Guilford Courthouse Battlefield, where we were followed around by the cutest stray cat. She was really skinny and I wish I could have given her food or taken her home or something. I went to my Greensboro church this morning, and it was great like usual. I wish I could just put the whole church in my suitcase and take it with me wherever I go. I also went to Ed McKay's, because I can never have too many books :)

No more Nutrition! I'm so glad to see that class end. Unfortunately, I'm definitely not getting an A, because I completely missed one of the exams. I got up, got ready, and started off to class, then realized that I had been an hour behind all morning...I set my alarm for 9, thinking it was 8; kept looking at the clock and thinking it said 8:45 when it actually said 9:45....I think I'm getting senile. Somebody had a seizure during our final today; it was a little scary.

I've been working on this paper due Friday - I have to write an analysis of a 1956 Saturday Evening Post. It's not that hard to write, but I'm not sure that I'm writing what she wants. Hopefully I can finish it tonight, so that I can hang out with my roomies or read a good book. I have two exams on Monday, but I'm not going to work on those until tomorrow night.

I got a 95 on my 20 minute Archaeology presentation on Roman Judaism, which was really exciting. Most people gave me nice comments, including a couple of people who said I was a pro and that it was the best presentation all semester :D Any public speaking skills I have are all due to working at Blandwood. Speaking of which, I only have two more days there, Friday and Sunday :( I'll probably cry when I leave on Sunday, haha. Not working there is going to be really strange. You Greensboro people should all come to Art in the Garden (art from Two Art Chicks & the museum is open for free) from 1-4 on Sunday and say hi to me!

Next week, I'm going to Virginia to visit Becca! I'm looking forward to relaxing in rural Virginia and basking in the knowledge that college is over :)

Applied for another job! Education Assistant at Reynolda House. It's a one-year position, and sort of a step up from the interpreting I do at Blandwood. I'd get to do bus tours! I think that makes me sound important...haha.

Also, I need to send off an application for another position - it was listed through the Virginia Employment Commission, which neglected to mention the name and location of the museum. Very weird. Anyway, I'm not sure I'm entirely qualified for it, as it's an Assistant Curator position, but I'll try it out.

For the last half hour, I've been trying to figure out if I applied for another job tonight, because I had this vague feeling.... I'm still shaky on the details, but I think it was an Assistant Registrar position? I remember something about receiving and sending loans. I wasn't totally qualified for it either, but I guess it doesn't hurt to apply when the application is nothing more than sending in a resume. Hopefully soon I'll remember more details, like, uhh - the name of the museum! Seriously, I have been so spacy lately.

I'll be interviewing for the Oak View job on Thursday, so we'll see what they can offer me in the way of hours and pay...

I sent out my first job application today! It seemed too easy, because all I had to send was my resume, but I'm thankful I didn't have to fill out a long application (not like the frustrating WFU one a few weeks ago...). It's for a job at Oak View Historic Park in Raleigh, which I actually visited over Spring Break. It's a really gorgeous site - an old cotton plantation. So it sounds pretty cool, but we'll just see what happens. I'll have an interview in the next couple of weeks.

It's weird applying for a job, because I was starting to get used to the idea of hanging out at home for a while this summer. The thought of reading outside and going on hikes and just relaxing sounds so nice. I would probably volunteer at the Mountain Heritage Center to give myself something to do and keep up my museum involvement. And I think Becca will be at home? Wherever I am, I'll be back in Greensboro periodically for weddings and random visits to get a change of scenery.

My poor car has had more problems in the last two weeks than in the previous six years. I had to get one of the tires replaced because it had some kind of defect, and now some part in the engine is broken, so my brakes don't really work for a few seconds after I accelerate. It's pretty cool, yeah. But this part has apparently been broken since October, so hopefully it will last until I can get it home to the mechanic this weekend. And hopefully those are not my famous last words!

-At the risk of damaging my classicist cred, I have to say that I really liked 300. It made me want to stay up all night translating Herodotus and Thucydides. I don't really care that it wasn't entirely historically accurate. It was fun. I think the ancient Greeks themselves would have liked it.

-Heather and I played this awesome game, kind of a simpler version of Cranium. I can't remember what it was called, but it involved me breakdancing and pretending to be a pro wrestler.

-One of my new favorite bands is Architecture in Helsinki. They're sort of a mix of Tilly and Devotchka, with alot of clapping and upbeat yelling about math and cemeteries. Let's Go Sailing is another good band I've been listening to...it's good rainy day music.

-Mrs. Danford cracks me up. In Latin class today: "If you miss a cum clause, you need to slap yourself - and I mean hard! It's a friggin clause that starts with 'cum'!"

So I never wrote anything about it, but last Sunday I got to go to Raleigh to meet Jamie Tworkowski, the founder of To Write Love on Her Arms. He gave a really great talk on depression and suicide and Crystal, Jenn, and I got to go to dinner with him afterwards to talk and hear more about his recent trip to India. He and TWLOHA are so inspiring, and he makes me eager to do something great with my own life. He'll be in Charlotte Wednesday night, but unfortunately I have class, so I can't go.

That was alot of fun, but overall the last couple of weeks have been really crappy. It was a terribly stupid idea to date a close friend, and I ended up not only losing a boyfriend, but also a best friend. I really don't like being an angry, emotional person...it's not normal for me and so it's very hard to deal with. So if I'm ignoring you, it doesn't have anything to do with you.

I can't believe I'll be 22 tomorrow...it just feels old! I'm going out to dinner with some of my friends, but I really wish I could spend the day with my family. In two weeks, though, it'll be a much needed spring break, and I get to go stay in my grandparents' guest house in Beaufort (beach!) with my mom.

BTW, Lindsay - instead of doing homework, I've been making you a mix cd, so we either need to get together or you can send me your address and have a cd exchange :)
